11 Sept – How Great They Are: A Journey of Discovery with Noosa’s Greater Gliders, Rachel Lyons

Hidden high in the forest canopy, the greater glider is one of Australia’s most remarkable yet elusive marsupials. Once widespread throughout eastern Australia’s forests, this gentle nocturnal species now faces increasing threats from habitat loss, climate change and the fragmentation of its forest home.

Join us on a journey as we explore the lives of these extraordinary creatures, uncover the science behind their conservation, and learn about the dedicated efforts being made to protect their habitat.

Since her first encounter with a wild greater glider more than 25 years ago, Rachel has been on a quiet quest to understand this secretive species that inhabits Noosa’s tall forests.

Drawing on decades of observations on her Pomona property, hands-on experience rehabilitating injured and orphaned gliders, and research into survey techniques, habitat use, and forest restoration, Rachel will share the lessons she has learned along the way. She will also provide an overview of the current knowledge of greater gliders in the Noosa region and discuss the opportunities and challenges involved in securing their future. Come along to the forum on the 11th September to learn more about this amazing animal.
