June 12 – Latest Research on the Eastern Ground Parrot (& Water Mouse), Kieran Aland, Wildwise Environmental Services

The Eastern ground parrot (Pezoporus wallicus) occurs in remnant heath in some areas of the Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay, Cooloola and K’Gari. Previously widespread in coastal heaths along the south-eastern Australian seaboard, the mainland populations of this bird now exist in isolated remnants. Kieran Aland, an experienced field ecologist, will discuss the current status of the Sunshine Coast population and the challenges that these beautiful birds face. 

Kieran will also briefly discuss the status of the water mouse (Xeromys myoides) on the Sunshine Coast.  Found in only three areas of Australia, this tiny, rare rodent eats crabs, shellfish, mud lobsters and marine flatworms and therefore is highly dependent upon the preservation of mangrove ecosystems.

 Everyone is welcome at the Noosa Parks Association Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville where the forum starts at 10:30am with morning tea available from 10-10:25am. Entry is $5 by ‘tap & go’ at the door which includes morning tea/coffee.  Free admittance for current members of Noosa Parks Association.
